In this lesson, you will learn how to set up ChatGPT, alongside learning some basic prompting method to get you started.
Hey everyone, it’s Shimron from BitesizedGenius, and in this video, we’ll go over how you can get started with using ChatGPT and we’ll go over the basics of prompting. But let me give it to you Bitesize.
So, it all begins on the main page of the ChatGPT website, where you’ll have some information on the service, research, products, safety, and the company, as well as some samples of what the tool can do below the page.
You can explore the information on the web page at your leisure, as this video is focused on how you can get started with using the tool and interacting with the AI. And the option we’ll be focusing on is “Try ChatGPT.”
You also have the option to download ChatGPT to your desktop on Apple and Microsoft devices, but we’ll be using the web version by selecting “Try ChatGPT.”
Once you select this option, you’ll be brought to a page where you can either log in or sign up, alongside viewing the terms of use and privacy policy.
We’ll hit the sign-up button, and once it loads, you’ll have a couple of options for signing up, such as using your email, Google, Microsoft, or Apple account. I’ll be signing up using my email. Once entered, you can provide a password that meets their requirements.
After registering, you’ll need to verify your email using the verification email you receive in your inbox. Once that’s done, you can enter your name, date of birth, and proceed to the ChatGPT user interface, where you’ll have a couple of options to explore.
Before delving into the features, I quickly want to show you the different plans available. You may want to consider upgrading to access improved functionality while using the service. The plans are divided into four tiers:
- Free: This is the default option, allowing you to use ChatGPT. You’ll also have access to GPT-4 0mini, a small language model designed for cost-efficient interaction while maintaining performance. Limited access to GPT-4 0, data analysis, file uploads, vision (which describes the model’s ability to interpret images), web browsing, and custom GPTs is also included.
- Plus: This plan includes all features from the Free tier without limitations, plus early access to new features, full access to all GPT models, more messages for GPT-4 0, access to DALL-E for text-to-image generation, and the ability to create custom GPTs. DALL-E generates images based on text descriptions (prompts).
- Team: This plan requires at least two users and includes all features from the Plus plan, alongside the ability to create and share GPTs within a workspace, an admin console for workspace management, and team data exclusion from training by default, ensuring privacy.
- Enterprise: This plan is designed for large companies, government agencies, or think tanks. It offers better security, data privacy, administrative controls, and a closer partnership with OpenAI for bespoke needs.
I’ll be using the Plus membership for this tutorial but will switch between memberships to note any differences.
Now, let’s dive into the ChatGPT interface. The first option is on the top-left sidebar, allowing you to close or open the sidebar for more room in the chatbox or access additional features and historical chats.
The top-right buttons include a search function to look through historical chats, and a “New Chat” button to start a fresh chat while saving the existing one in the sidebar for later access.
Historical chats can be renamed, shared via link, archived, or deleted. Archived chats are accessible under “Settings” > “General” > “Archived Chats,” where they can be unarchived or deleted.
The “Explore GPTs” interface shows custom versions of ChatGPT designed for specific tasks like website generation or coding. The “Create” button is only available to Plus members.
In the main interface, you can switch between models. Free users can toggle between ChatGPT and GPT Plus (essentially GPT-4 0), though the latter requires a membership upgrade. Temporary chats allow unsaved interactions and can be cleared easily.
The interface also offers preset job examples, like brainstorming or creating images, to explore the tool’s capabilities. The top-right button with your initials leads to account management options, including settings, plan upgrades, and logout.
At the bottom is the message box where you type your input. It supports file uploads (e.g., documents, spreadsheets, images) for analysis or assistance. Below responses, options include reading aloud, copying, rating, regenerating, or switching models.
For advanced features, enabling web searches allows real-time internet-informed responses with cited sources. The up arrow submits queries, while the stop icon interrupts processing.
Lastly, ChatGPT excels in various applications, from generating meal plans or simplifying research papers to creative writing, coding assistance, and educational support.
For example, it can outline a novel, provide HTML code, or create a math curriculum. These features make it a powerful tool for both professional and personal use.
I hope this video has helped you get started with ChatGPT. Check out the other videos in the course for a complete learning experience. This is BitesizedGenius, and I hope you enjoyed!
